GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said he is willing to debate against his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris three times in September on various television networks.
Speaking at a press conference at his Palm Beach residence in Florida Trump said he wanted to hold the debates on these specific dates: September 4 on Fox, September 10 on NBC, and September 25 on ABC.
Trump said, “I think it’s very important to have debates,” and added that “We’d like to do three debates,” the USA Today reported.
However, he did not provide further details regarding the format, such as the presence of an audience. It remains unclear whether his campaign team has formally approached Harris’ representatives with this suggestion.
The press conference marked Trump’s first public appearance following Harris’ announcement on Tuesday that she had chosen the Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate.
Harris and her pair Tim Walz addressed massive crowds at campaign events in Michigan and Wisconsin on Wednesday. The rallies, which attracted tens of thousands of supporters, demonstrated the significant impact Harris has had on energizing the Democratic base since her late entry into the presidential race.
The Trump campaign has been forced to reevaluate their approach and messaging in response to Harris’s swift ascent, which followed President Joe Biden‘s decision to end his struggling campaign last month.
Opinion polls indicate that Harris has closed the gap that Trump had previously established over Biden, and the Democratic Party has seen a surge in donations from both individual voters and major contributors, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in just a few weeks.
As part of their efforts to engage blue-collar voters in crucial swing states, Harris and Walz were scheduled to meet with auto workers in Detroit on Thursday. This meeting comes on the heels of the United Auto Workers union’s endorsement of their ticket.
The Harris campaign canceled events on Thursday in North Carolina and on Friday in Georgia, where Tropical Storm Debby is bringing heavy rain and dangerous flooding. The Democrats will head to Arizona and Nevada later this week, visiting two more swing states likely to play a key role in the Nov. 5 election.
