Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mughdo, a master’s student at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was captured on video running amidst the violence surrounding the quota reform movement just 15 minutes before he was tragically shot dead on July 18 in Uttara. Mughdo was distributing food, water, and biscuits to the protesters during the agitation when he lost his life, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
“Paani lagbe paani” were Mughdo’s final words as he handed out water bottles to the protesters amid the violent clashes that day.
His twin brother, Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, shared a video on social media showing Mughdo, 25, distributing water to protesters after law enforcers used teargas shells to disperse them in Azampur, Uttara.
Tragically, just 15 minutes later, a bullet struck his forehead and pierced through his right ear when law enforcers opened fire. By the time his friends brought him to Crescent Hospital, he had already passed away, as reported by The Daily Star.
In remembrance of Mughdo’s selfless act, students were seen offering free water to pedestrians while managing traffic at various intersections in Dhaka on Wednesday.
At the Dhanmondi 27 intersection, a student approached people with the same words, “Paani Lagbe Paani.”
The quota reform movement and the subsequent crackdown led to a political crisis in Bangladesh, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepping down from her position and leaving the nation in turmoil.
The brutal suppression of the protests, which had evolved from demonstrations against employment quotas to a full-scale movement demanding her removal from power, resulted in the deaths of hundreds of individuals.
