JD Vance, chosen by former US President Donald Trump as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2024 elections, discussed nuclear proliferation with a friend, speculating on which Islamist country might have been the first to acquire nuclear weapons, Al Jazeera reported.
“What is the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon? Maybe it’s Iran, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts. And then we sort of finally decided, maybe it’s actually the UK since Labour just took over,” 39-year-old first-time lawmaker from Ohio said as per Al-Jazeera.
Vance, a prominent advocate of “America First,” has been critical of US support for Ukraine and has backed Trump’s position on Israel’s war against Hamas. Despite once calling Trump “America’s Hitler,” Vance has undergone a radical political transformation over the past eight years, evolving from a self-described “Never Trump” conservative to a staunch MAGA loyalist and defender of the former president.
He also offered advice to his “Tory friends” following the Conservative Party’s defeat in the recent UK general elections, suggesting they needed to “get a handle” on the situation. These remarks were made at a National Conservatism conference in Washington.
Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss was spotted at the Milwaukee Republican convention on Monday, where Trump was officially nominated as the Republican Party’s presidential pick for the November 2024 election.
Truss told Sky News that Trump was “defiant” and showed “strength and fortitude” after the attempt on his life, while also describing Joe Biden as a “weak president.”
Vance, a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in political science and philosophy, enrolled at Yale Law School in 2010 and was elected to the US Senate in 2022. In 2003, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Iraq as a corporal with the Public Affairs section of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.
Former Republican Party presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who attended Yale with Vance, endorsed his support for the vice-presidential pick. Ramaswamy expressed his pride in Vance and believed that the Trump-Vance ticket will be “the most formidable presidential ticket” of his lifetime.
The running mate announcement comes just two days after Trump escaped an attempted assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
According to the Washington Post, an anonymous Biden-Harris campaign official stated that Vice President Kamala Harris had reached out to Vance to congratulate him and express her hope for a meeting in a proposed CBS News debate.
Vance’s background includes growing up in a steel mill community in Ohio, facing family struggles with drug addiction and poverty. He served in the Marine Corps for four years, including a six-month deployment to Iraq, before pursuing his education and working in corporate law and investment.
