The installation of solar panels in Chadstone Shopping Centre

Next year, Chadstone Shopping Centre, which is located in Victoria, will be installed with thousands of solar panels. These solar panels will also be used to offer shades to the vehicles that are belonging to shoppers. Chadstone Shopping Centre is one of the largest shopping centres in the whole of Australia with over 500 stores. The centre hosts thousands of browsers and shoppers every day with the majority using their cars; hence the need for more parking area. Today, the centre has over 10,000 parking lots and is expecting to get 850 more in the near future. The Chadstone’s first stage parking project will commence next year in February and will have over 400 solar shaded parking bays.

Carolyn Viney, Vicinity Centres Chief Development Officer, said that the solar installation project would have a total capacity of 1.6MW, which is expected to produce approximately 2133,000 kilowatt-hours of clean power each year. The stage will be accomplished before the end of Spring next year, and another parking will start totalling 1,400 new parking lots.

Chadstone will be the first centre in the 21st century to have on-site renewables. So far, the company’s solar assets amount to $73 million, which are spread all over the country. By the end of the last fiscal year, the company had a PV capacity of 25.2MW, which was installed starting in 2018. In 2019 only, some of the installed systems include Elizabeth City Centre (SA), Castle Plaza (SA), DFO Homebush (NSW), Victoria Gardens (VIC), Altona Gate (VIC), Livingston Marketplace (WA), and Ellenbrook Central (WA).

One of the largest solar installations of this company is at Elizabeth City Centre in Adelaide’s north with a total capacity of 5.9MW. Vicinity also has power storage at Castle Plaza, which has a capacity of 2.24MW and battery storage of 548 kWh. This is the biggest battery installation in Australia in a shopping centre.

Vicinity plans to have 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030 in most of its fully owned assets. During the 2020 Annual Report, the company says that it attained a 17% decrease in carbon intensity and a 12% decrease in power intensity. Vicinity won the 2019 Australian Business Award for Sustainability for its efforts to clean energy transition. Early this year, the company was put in CDP’s 2019 Climate A-List. This was a big achievement since out of 8,000 companies that were analyzed, only 182 companies joined the A-List.
