In an election which saw many major newspapers deciding to endorse neither Donald Trump nor Kamala Harris, The Economist Thursday announced that they would be backing vice president Kamala Harris. Their statement also mentioned the fact that many newspapers refused to back a presidential candidate.
“Tens of millions of Americans will vote for Mr. Trump next week. Some will be true believers. But many will take a calculated risk that in office his worst instincts would be constrained.” If Trump wins the election, Americans would be gambling with the economy, the rule of law and international peace.
The Economist said Harris is not without shortcomings but they are, by contrast, ordinary. “And none of them are disqualifying. If The Economist had a vote, we would cat it for her.

It has been a tradition for the publication houses to endorse a candidate though the candidates endorsed by newspapers did not always win. In 1897, almost all New York newspapers endorsed the candidate who lost. The LA Times and the Washington Post drew flak for not taking a stand this time.
